05 Plants for Unity
lllustrations by Maisy Summer. Curated from the Youth Forums storyboards, sketches, and colour palettes.
Project in Collaboration with The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Working alongside Illustrator Maisy Summer I assisted with the design and layout of the comic.
Centred around three important stories; The Fungi’s Forest, The Ugly Hereos, and No Pig is an Island. Hitting topics of biodiversity, habitat loss, belonging, and that every plant and fungus (no matter how “ugly”!) has it’s place firmly rooted in our ecosystem!
Maisy Summer hosted 6 workshops monthly with the youth forum group taking the project from ideation, research gathering, interviewing kew scientists, developing characters and narratives, script writing and development, storyboarding to artwork with the help and guidance of Dan Pollock - the project’s director & part of the Kew Youth Forum team.
Each group also made their own collaborative font which we used to highlight key words throughout. Additionally, they all confidently presented their comics and ideas at the Kew Gardens Community Open Week 2024.
